What’s going on? The sound system at fabric

I went to fabric (famed London nightclub) for the first time since before the pandemic. The night was ‘AW60’, a party dedicated to the memory of Andrew Weatherall. If you’ve been to fabric before you will be pleased to know nothing has changed. The club is still the same mix of draconian entry requirements resulting in long queues, mixed with a welcoming, friendly crowd, celebrating diversity.

So, what’s going on? If you have NOT been to fabric then you should know the sound system in the main room is still one of the best I have heard in an indoor club space. The DJs last night were pushing the tempos (house & techno flavours at 140 BPM at time I reckon), and moving into pretty cavernous kick and bass territory at times. I find that lesser sound systems tend to suffer when dealing with fast tempos and techno bass lines. Not so the fabric main room system. You can still hear the variations in textures, the arrangements, and the complexities of each production when played out in the main room. So often fast stuff just ends up sounding like a booming kick drum solo all night, which makes dancing unrewarding.

What do you reckon? What is the best club sound system you have heard? Drop me a line, or post in the comments.
