What’s going on? Nile Rodgers’s guitar strap

I finally got round to making music this week. I spent most of last week trying to recover files and music from failed disks. That’s all sorted now. I am still getting used to having the sub-woofer at my feet (see last weeks ‘Whats Going On‘ ) .I’m enjoying FEELING bass though; the sensation makes music creation even more pleasurable.

So, what’s going on with Nile Rodgers? To be more exact, what’s going on with Nile Rodgers and his guitar strap? Rodgers and Chic are performing at festivals and open-air gigs this summer, Many of the adverts for these gigs use this photo:

…showing Rodgers dressed in his usual flamboyant way, in mid-strum. Wearing a guitar strap that says ‘NILE RODGERS’ in big letters. I don’t know why this bothers me so much I must write about it, and it does. Nile Rodgers is the epitome of cool; wearing a guitar strap, or t-shirt, or hat, or whatever, with your name or the name of your musical act, is not. (You don’t believe me? Google, ‘bands wearing their own t-shirt’, and read the result. You will probably be served this result at the top of the page, which pretty much ends any argument as to the relative ‘coolness’ of wearing your own merch: ).

Back to Nile and the strap. I am bothered. Has no-one had a word? Has his guitar tech ever said, ‘dude, EVERYONE knows who you are, especially if they have paid to see you, you don’t need your name on your strap’?

People probably have. And Rodgers still has his name on his strap to remind us of his achievements. The strap promotes asking the question, ‘why does he have his name on his guitar strap’. To which the answer is, ‘because he is Nile f*****g Rodgers’.

TRACK OF THE WEEK

My track of the week is an old cut from SCB. Originally released on vinyl on 2011, I heard it again on Spotify the other day and it pulled my ear. The track is one of those ‘timeless’ house tunes with the elements you would expect (cut-up female vocals, bubbly bass, deep pads) all placed together with care. Listen on Spotify here:
