What’s going on? Should I TikTok?

I sent some new tracks off for mastering this week. This is for a new release in May. Which leads me onto…

Should I post TikTok-type videos?

I read some articles about the popularity of short-form video (SFV). You know, TikTok – type videos featuring snippets of life. Apparently, Americans spend an average of 64 minutes each day on social media. 40 minutes of that is spent watching video clips. That time is up from the 28 minutes watching video just three years ago. And the increased time watching video while on socials must be due to the popularity, and now ubiquity, of SFV.

So, what’s going on? I am a producer of electronic music and a DJ. I want to get my music heard, and for my popularity to get me DJ gigs. All books, articles, and guides on modern music marketing point towards using social media as one of the ways to get fans, grow a following, and build a network. I know this and understand the process. However, reading the articles on the spread of SFV has made me ponder my marketing strategy. Now, beyond posting pictures on Instagram, it seems I should be posting SFV to promote my music. Six time a day on TikTok, apparently.

I do not use social media to promote my music. This will change soon. At the moment I am reading lots of posts by people I follow and commenting on them. Proper comments. Attempting to carry on the conversation started by the post. I am enjoying this interaction far more than racking my brains to come up with ideas for posts and other content. So, I am ignoring the ‘six times a day’ stuff for the moment. However, I know that when I do start to create content, I would be a fool to ignore SMV.

Or would I? What do you think? Do you watch much SMV and if so, does it have any effect on you and the music you listen to? I am interested in your thoughts. Please post in the comments!

TRACK OF THE WEEK

Charles Webster – Music (Jazzuelle Rotary Dream Mix)

I used to be in a ‘band’ (electronic music duo) with Charles, and this popped up on my ‘Release Radar’ this week.  I really like the juxtaposition of the dreamy, vocals, soft pads, and the raging kick drum in the first and second part of the tune. Open your windows and let this mellow sound waft into the world.
